Last Tonight Show With Coco O B

So Gawker did a good job again of compiling the segments of tonight’s show – the last Tonight Show with Conan – as well as a few clips from the other late night hosts tonight. Pop over and watch – be sure to check out Jimmy’s opening segment as well.

If you’re pressed for time though, here’s the highlight – 12:45am entry. Unfortunately I can’t embed the video from Gawker, so until it’s on YouTube you’ll have to click through and find it. It’s Conan’s farewell speech – the “legit”, no joking one.  Very classy.

For any die hard fans who did make a point to catch Conan, 7 months may seem a long way off, but I’m sure Conan and his staff can tell you the opposite.

Yes jokes, jokes are good. Also plugs are good too. Die Hard (nice segue Ro) on the big screen, February 27th at Empire Theatres in Moncton, presented by the two jokers you come here to watch videos off (hopefully!) – but some tickets to the right of your screen via paypal…you know, just sayin’.

NBC & Coco Reach Settlement!

Ending one of the ugliest chapters in NBC’s storied history, the Peacock officially announced today that it has reached an agreement with Conan O’Brien, who has agreed to abdicate his role as the host of The Tonight Show by Jan. 22 in exchange for a large cash payout that sources place at more than $40 million, some of which will go toward severance for his staff, and the promise not to seek employment elsewhere until after Sept. 1.

At the same time, Jay Leno, whose failed primetime show was canceled earlier this month, will return to The Tonight Show on March 1, when job one will no doubt be to restore the franchise’s dwindling ratings. O’Brien just ushered in the Tonight Show’s worst November-sweeps performance since 1993.

Well, it’s all over now kids………what do you think?

Wait, Was That Bear Just…

Yes the world has bigger fish to fry, but I like that after dealing with my own personal dramas, and being weighed down by the weight of the world’s issues, that I still have the opportunity left to check in on Conan before he leaves NBC – a man who knows he will be alright despite it all, so why not have some fun at the network’s expense.

Check out gawker.com, they have put together the play-by-play that was the January 20th Tonight Show. Plus a few highlights of the talk show circuit’s take on the whole situation.

Psych! Yeah, five years ago when everything could be empty and hollow.

Thank you to Dr Venture for finding this and tweeting it.

Five years must have seemed so long from that point it was easy to give things away.

Quick! Watch some Tonight Show clips of Conan ripping on NBC from this week, before NBC gets wise and replaces them with an old dude and newspaper headlines, banishing them not only out of the time zone, but ultimately out of time itself.

All this makes me miss Mike Bullard – not his being on TV, I just mean it’s been awhile since I was at Speedy Lube to get him to change the oil in the car. (Little Canuck humour for you guys there)

OH NO IT’S STARTED – HE’S BACK!

“Kevin, *sniff* that’s got some meat to it….powerful”

Team Coco Artwork

Over at gawker.com they’ve begun making a collage of the newest and biggest internet sensation sine lolcats – Team Conan artwork.

Before you head over, please note that some of it does have some strong language in it – those crazy internet nerds will say anything.

As promised in my last post – unless you came here late in which case this is all new to you, The recent interview Patton Oswalt gave, wherein they touch on the current “debacle” over at NBC.

It’s audio only guys, and be advised there is some strong language in there – oddly enough though just from the interviewer – probably being “edgy”. Someone give that guy the 11:35 slot.

I have to go lie down, I hurt my fingers doing too many air quotes just now…

So I’ve put off commenting on this for long enough. I feel this especially so after reading an article today from The New York Times that seemed to say it was done and O’Brien had hit the road. Negatory people, hang on. Based on his I assume very carefully worded press release, he’s done all he can up to actually quitting outright – leave it up to NBC to back down, or make the decision that gets Conan looking for ways out of his contract guilt free.

As of right now, and trust me I looked to be sure on this one, NBC has “pended” it’s response for the time being, and are expecting O’Brien to be there to tape his show tonight, which will be airing within an hour of me typing this.

O’Brien’s press release is below:

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over “The Tonight Show” in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004, I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my “Tonight Show” in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the “Tonight Show” to 12:05 to accommodate the “Jay Leno Show” at 11:35. For 60 years, the “Tonight Show” has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the “Tonight Show” into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The “Tonight Show” at 12:05 simply isn’t the “Tonight Show.” Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the “Late Night” show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard, and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of “The Tonight Show.” But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet, a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the “Tonight Show,” I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

Whether he meant it or not, his opening paragraph sums up the reality of it all, and maybe that’s why I held out commenting until now. When I saw this though via Rainn Wilson’s twitter (not his he won’t take sides but he did retweet it) it had to be acknowledged.

*EDIT* Just came back from twitter to let you all in on the new trending topic #teamconan, and the Team Conan avatar ribbon. Young people love Conan. No fear Leno, your support from the older demographics will be in once the US Postal Services delivers them all in two weeks.

Apparently Levi Johnston is not a happy camper! The Tonight Show has been having delicious fun with poking fun at Levi’s Twitter tweets by having acting legend William Shatner read them, in ’60s hep-cat style complete with bongos and bass! Now it seems he wants an apology! This is apparently the text of the statement from one of his reps………………..

“My client, Levi Johnston, is being impersonated on your media (Twitter) and this is leading to libel and slanderous statements being attributed to him. … We want you to put an immediate end to this illegal activity. … You are being used as a medium to promote this illegality and we want immediate action. … You are now on notice and must take steps to put an end to what is clearly against the law and against your policy. … We want to know what steps you will be taking to correct what is clearly a problem which is escalating.”

Watch the genius clip of Shatner and tell us if you think Johnston is as much of a douche as we do!
