Weekend Box Office Estimates!

Shutter Island debuted in the # 1 spot this weekend with an estimated gross of $40,200,000, which is an extremely solid figure for this time of year. The combination of Scorsese / DiCaprio again making a dent at the Box Office!

The # 2 position went to last weeks top film Valentine’s Day, with another solid figure for a 2nd week film of this subject matter, $17,160,000.

Avatar continues to smash all records by actually rising a spot from last weekend to finish a very close # 3, with an estimated $16,100,000. The film is now almost definitely going to break the only record pretty much left that it can. It will end up being the only film to date that will cross the $700,000,000 mark domestically in North America! Considering the previous holder of the highest grossing film ever, Titanic, just squeaked over the $600 million mark this accomplishment is nothing short of miraculous!

Percy Jackson finished in fourth place with an estimated $15,300,000 and the god awful The Wolfman rounded out the Top 5 with a HUGE second week drop with an estimated total of $9,846,000.

The Insanity That is Avatar!

With the weekend box office figures now actualised the behemoth that goes by the name Avatar continues to shatter all perceived notions of what a “blockbuster” should be………..and is indeed on the fast track to being the first film to cross the $2 billion mark internationally!

Yep……you read that right……..TWO BILLION DOLLARS!

The sheer magnitude of Avatar’s success is insanity unto itself and most of Hollywoods elite are still reeling. Not to mention all the studios who have, in the past, refused to work with James Cameron. I’m sure he has only one sentence to say to these former naysayers………”Suck It!”………………LOL!

Avatar Is Officially # 1!!!!

Avatar has now officially become the highest grossing movie of all time, passing previous record holder Titanic on Monday!

The even more amazing part to this story is that it did it in only 41 days! It took Titanic 5 months to reach the same amount and Avatar is still going unbelievably strong!

The other twist of course is that both Titanic and Avatar are James Cameron films, a feat not to be sniffed at, and pretty much makes him the real king of Hollywood!

Avatar Smashes Another Record!

Yep! That Titanic record is really beginning to look like a thing of the past!

After a fifth week on top domestically and continued HUGE box office internationally, Avatar is now sitting at approximately $1,620,491,649 about $200,000,000 shy of the record haul Titanic took in 1998. A record that most sane, rational people thought was untouchable!

Records are meant to be broken of course and it’s looking like a lock in to me!

Avatar Back On Top!

You just can’t keep a good bitch down!

Denzel Washington’s The Book of Eli couldn’t hold its early Friday lead, dropping into second place after Saturday’s box office results filtered in. Estimates for the weekend put Avatar back on top for the fifth week in a row with a 3-day take of $41.3 million, off only 18% from last weekend. The film’s domestic take now stands at $491 million.

Eli, from The Hughes Bros., took the number two spot with $31.6 million, giving the apocalyptic drama a healthy debut and a welcome return for the directing team. Paramount’s decision to delay its wide release of The Lovely Bones to this weekend seems to be paying off. The film connected with teenage girls as the marketing gurus had predicted and earned $17.1 million for a respectable third place finish.

Position four went to Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel which grossed another $11.5 million, putting its total domestic gross at $192.6 million. Sherlock Holmes nabbed the fifth spot with $9.8 million, putting its total at $180 million.

Eli Beats Avatar On Friday!

For the first time in five weeks, a film has out-grossed Avatar.

If early estimates hold, the Denzel Washington-starrer The Book of Eli grossed $11.7 million on Friday, while Avatar earned an estimated $10.5 million. The rest of the weekend will be closely watched to see if Avatar can maintain its record-grossing run for its fifth week in theaters.

Third place for Friday went to The Lovely Bones, which expanded wide this week for the first time since it began its limited run five weeks ago. Its estimated Friday gross stood at $5.7 million. The Robert Downey Jr.-starrer Sherlock Holmes earned an estimated $2.8 million for its fourth Friday in theaters, while Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel nabbed an additional $2.4 million. Check back here throughout the weekend for box office updates.

And of course now I have found the first real complaint about being in Australia! i can’t see The Book Of Eli until I return! damn you Ro!

Well……….it’s now official!

Avatar has successfully become the 2nd highest grossing film of all time globally behind James Cameron’s other little indie flick Titanic!

Avatar surpassed the previous # 2 on the list, The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King yesterday, and now sits at around the $1,137,800,000 mark. It is also truly remarkable to have the top two highest grossing films of  all time be made by the same director!

Something tells me that Ol’ Jimmy boy is not gonna be short of parking meter change anytime soon!……….If you’re reading Mr.Cameron…….long time fans needing a loan here!

Avatar Overtakes Dark Knight!

After only 17 days James Cameron’s Avatar has crossed the $1 billion mark, overtaking the previous #4 film Dark Knight!

In fact if numbers continue along estimates, the film is expected to pass Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to become second-biggest worldwide release of all time behind Cameron’s last film, Titanic.

So just exactly how big is this monster? At the U.S. box-office it has made $352 million so far, the second-largest grossing film of 2009. It’s expected to pass the $402 million that Transformers Revenge of the Fallen earned by the weekend – achieving in three weeks what took ‘Fallen’ nearly four months to achieve.

Internationally it is sitting around the $667- million area, making it second only to Ice Age:Dawn Of The Dinosaurs, which was the highest grossing global film in 2009 with $691- million in total. Avatar will easily pass that mark in the next day or so.

In other words, this baby is HUGE! Cameron will easily have the Number 1 and Number 2 highest grossing films of all time on his resume!

Box Office Gold For Avatar!

Even with Sherlock Holmes opening on Christmas Day, nothing could get in the way of the juggernaut that is Avatar!

With the weekend estimates in, the James Cameron directed epic pulled in an estimated $75 million, with Sherlock Holmes in a distant second with $65- million. While the numbers for Sherlock Holmes are very good, the studio is no doubt disappointed it could not hold off Avatar.

There were two big surprises though! Alvin & The Cipmunks: The Squeakquel did a whopping $50- million in estimates and the Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin starrer It’s Complicated did a solid $22- million.

With the weekend estimates now in, Avatar has taken in a whopping $73 million in it’s opening weekend! While this is at the low end of studio expectations, that figure still firmly places it as the second highest opening December weekend behind I Am Legend, and the biggest 3-D opening ever!

The other thing to take into account is that much of the east coast of the U.S was buried in record breaking snowfalls! So really the numbers are quite impressive.

Overall, despite the blizzard, box office was up a whopping 58 percent from last year, when the Jim Carrey comedy Yes Man was tops.
