Nicolas Chartier who financed The Hurt Locker and is one of the 4 officially credited producers can’t attend the Academy Awards because he sent a mass email that never even mentioned Avatar by name?

And the Oscars governing body thinks his badmouthing is so much worse than what nearly everyone in the Best Picture category has done year after year? I find it ludicrous that the Academy of shame has made a decision so lame.

Is it then, in my opinion, mere coincidence that Academy president Tom Sherak (at one time a bigtime Fox movie exec), Oscars producers Bill Mechanic (at one time a bigtime Fox movie exec) and Adam Shankman (currently a bigtime Fox Broadcast talent), and Academy Board Of Governors member Jim Gianopulos (currently a bigtime Fox movie exec) all have strong ties to the Avatar studio?

The Academy should have leaned over backwards not to appear Fox-sympathetic because of this. Would this draconian action have been taken if Chartier’s name had been Grazer or Rudin or some other Hollywood insider? I think not.

The “Springer Episode” that has been this lead up week to the Academy Awards has hit a new high!

Nicolas Chartier, a producer of the war story The Hurt Locker will not be allowed to attend Sunday’s Academy Awards because of e-mails he sent urging academy members to vote for his movie, Oscar overseers said Tuesday.

However, if Chartier wins best picture for The Hurt Locker, he will receive an Oscar at a later date.

The executive committee of the producers branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences imposed the penalty on Chartier, who violated Oscar rules that prohibit mailings promoting a film and disparaging another.

He did not immediately return a call Tuesday from The Associated Press seeking comment on the academy’s penalty. Officials at Summit Entertainment, which released The Hurt Locker, declined to comment.

Avatar producer Jon Landau did not immediately return a call for comment.

The Hurt Locker and Avatar have been at the head of the pack throughout awards season, and they lead the Oscar field with nine nominations each.

Avatar won the Golden Globe for best drama, but The Hurt Locker has dominated honors from critics and key Hollywood trade groups, including guilds representing directors, writers and producers.

At last month’s British Academy Film Awards, The Hurt Locker also won out over Avatar, taking six prizes, including best picture.

Well……..drama, drama, drama!

The Hurt Locker Backlash?!

I will be writing out a more thorough report on this later tonight, but by all accounts it seems The Hurt Locker backlash is revving up into full force ahead of this Sunday’s Academy Awards.

How badly will The Hurt Locker be hit? Only time will tell, but it does appear that Avatar has it’s nose slightly in front again for both Best picture and Best Director!

More soon!

Weekend Box Office Estimates!

Shutter Island debuted in the # 1 spot this weekend with an estimated gross of $40,200,000, which is an extremely solid figure for this time of year. The combination of Scorsese / DiCaprio again making a dent at the Box Office!

The # 2 position went to last weeks top film Valentine’s Day, with another solid figure for a 2nd week film of this subject matter, $17,160,000.

Avatar continues to smash all records by actually rising a spot from last weekend to finish a very close # 3, with an estimated $16,100,000. The film is now almost definitely going to break the only record pretty much left that it can. It will end up being the only film to date that will cross the $700,000,000 mark domestically in North America! Considering the previous holder of the highest grossing film ever, Titanic, just squeaked over the $600 million mark this accomplishment is nothing short of miraculous!

Percy Jackson finished in fourth place with an estimated $15,300,000 and the god awful The Wolfman rounded out the Top 5 with a HUGE second week drop with an estimated total of $9,846,000.

The Insanity That is Avatar!

With the weekend box office figures now actualised the behemoth that goes by the name Avatar continues to shatter all perceived notions of what a “blockbuster” should be………..and is indeed on the fast track to being the first film to cross the $2 billion mark internationally!

Yep……you read that right……..TWO BILLION DOLLARS!

The sheer magnitude of Avatar’s success is insanity unto itself and most of Hollywoods elite are still reeling. Not to mention all the studios who have, in the past, refused to work with James Cameron. I’m sure he has only one sentence to say to these former naysayers………”Suck It!”………………LOL!

Avatar Is Officially # 1!!!!

Avatar has now officially become the highest grossing movie of all time, passing previous record holder Titanic on Monday!

The even more amazing part to this story is that it did it in only 41 days! It took Titanic 5 months to reach the same amount and Avatar is still going unbelievably strong!

The other twist of course is that both Titanic and Avatar are James Cameron films, a feat not to be sniffed at, and pretty much makes him the real king of Hollywood!

Avatar Smashes Another Record!

Yep! That Titanic record is really beginning to look like a thing of the past!

After a fifth week on top domestically and continued HUGE box office internationally, Avatar is now sitting at approximately $1,620,491,649 about $200,000,000 shy of the record haul Titanic took in 1998. A record that most sane, rational people thought was untouchable!

Records are meant to be broken of course and it’s looking like a lock in to me!

Avatar Back On Top!

You just can’t keep a good bitch down!

Denzel Washington’s The Book of Eli couldn’t hold its early Friday lead, dropping into second place after Saturday’s box office results filtered in. Estimates for the weekend put Avatar back on top for the fifth week in a row with a 3-day take of $41.3 million, off only 18% from last weekend. The film’s domestic take now stands at $491 million.

Eli, from The Hughes Bros., took the number two spot with $31.6 million, giving the apocalyptic drama a healthy debut and a welcome return for the directing team. Paramount’s decision to delay its wide release of The Lovely Bones to this weekend seems to be paying off. The film connected with teenage girls as the marketing gurus had predicted and earned $17.1 million for a respectable third place finish.

Position four went to Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel which grossed another $11.5 million, putting its total domestic gross at $192.6 million. Sherlock Holmes nabbed the fifth spot with $9.8 million, putting its total at $180 million.

Eli Beats Avatar On Friday!

For the first time in five weeks, a film has out-grossed Avatar.

If early estimates hold, the Denzel Washington-starrer The Book of Eli grossed $11.7 million on Friday, while Avatar earned an estimated $10.5 million. The rest of the weekend will be closely watched to see if Avatar can maintain its record-grossing run for its fifth week in theaters.

Third place for Friday went to The Lovely Bones, which expanded wide this week for the first time since it began its limited run five weeks ago. Its estimated Friday gross stood at $5.7 million. The Robert Downey Jr.-starrer Sherlock Holmes earned an estimated $2.8 million for its fourth Friday in theaters, while Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel nabbed an additional $2.4 million. Check back here throughout the weekend for box office updates.

And of course now I have found the first real complaint about being in Australia! i can’t see The Book Of Eli until I return! damn you Ro!

Avatar Causing Depression?!

Movie goers are experiencing feelings of depression and in some cases even suicidal tendencies after seeing Avatar.

Fans are upset at not being able to visit Pandora, the make believe planet that is nirvana for the Na’vi, the blue native humanoids that habitat Pandora.

Forums on the internet have been swamped with posts by fans not being able to cope after seeing the movie and experiencing feelings of depression that they can’t visit the magical world of Pandora.

Avatar fan site, ‘Avatar Forums’ contains a thread titled ‘Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible’, which in itself contains nearly 1,000 posts.

Forum administrator Philippe Baghdassarian said: ‘I wasn’t depressed myself. In fact the movie made me happy.

‘But I can understand why it made people depressed. The movie was so beautiful and it showed something we don’t have here on Earth. I think people saw we could be living in a completely different world and that caused them to be depressed.’

OK. We know that this is just a film right?…………..LOL

Well……….it’s now official!

Avatar has successfully become the 2nd highest grossing film of all time globally behind James Cameron’s other little indie flick Titanic!

Avatar surpassed the previous # 2 on the list, The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King yesterday, and now sits at around the $1,137,800,000 mark. It is also truly remarkable to have the top two highest grossing films of  all time be made by the same director!

Something tells me that Ol’ Jimmy boy is not gonna be short of parking meter change anytime soon!……….If you’re reading Mr.Cameron…….long time fans needing a loan here!

Avatar Overtakes Dark Knight!

After only 17 days James Cameron’s Avatar has crossed the $1 billion mark, overtaking the previous #4 film Dark Knight!

In fact if numbers continue along estimates, the film is expected to pass Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to become second-biggest worldwide release of all time behind Cameron’s last film, Titanic.

So just exactly how big is this monster? At the U.S. box-office it has made $352 million so far, the second-largest grossing film of 2009. It’s expected to pass the $402 million that Transformers Revenge of the Fallen earned by the weekend – achieving in three weeks what took ‘Fallen’ nearly four months to achieve.

Internationally it is sitting around the $667- million area, making it second only to Ice Age:Dawn Of The Dinosaurs, which was the highest grossing global film in 2009 with $691- million in total. Avatar will easily pass that mark in the next day or so.

In other words, this baby is HUGE! Cameron will easily have the Number 1 and Number 2 highest grossing films of all time on his resume!

Avatar Passes $300 Million Mark!

It took director James Cameron’s Titanic 44 days to reach the $300 million mark. Twelve years later, Cameron’s Avatar has reached that same milestone nearly three times faster, in just its 15th day of release.

The 3-D epic grossed an estimated $25 million on New Years Day, pushing the film’s domestic total to $308.8 million. If that pace holds, expect the film to shatter Spider-Man’s $45 million record for the biggest ever third weekend in theaters.

It’s international total is standing around the $480 million area so after this weekend it should be pushing $900- million globally. Which should put it on track to become only the 5th film in history to cross the $1 billion line!

Box Office Gold For Avatar!

Even with Sherlock Holmes opening on Christmas Day, nothing could get in the way of the juggernaut that is Avatar!

With the weekend estimates in, the James Cameron directed epic pulled in an estimated $75 million, with Sherlock Holmes in a distant second with $65- million. While the numbers for Sherlock Holmes are very good, the studio is no doubt disappointed it could not hold off Avatar.

There were two big surprises though! Alvin & The Cipmunks: The Squeakquel did a whopping $50- million in estimates and the Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin starrer It’s Complicated did a solid $22- million.

Avatar Bigger Than Expected

Performing far better than expected on Sunday, 20th Century Fox and James Cameron’s “Avatar” finished the weekend with an opening gross of $77 million, instead of $73 million.

“Avatar” dropped a mere 3% from Saturday to Sunday, an unheard of feat, and a sign that the 3D sci-fi fantasy is already benefiting from tremendous word-of-mouth. The film also did better than initially projected overseas, grossing $165.5 million in its foreign debut, versus the $159.2 projected on Sunday. Worldwide total is $242.5 million.

“Avatar” scored the fifth best opening of all time internationally, narrowly beating the $165.4 opening of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.”

Domestically, “Avatar” came in just behind Warner Bros.’ Will Smith starrer “I Am Legend,” the record-holder of best December opening at $77.2 million.

“Avatar,” the widest 3D release to date, opened in 3,452 theaters, of which 2,023 were 3D runs.

With the weekend estimates now in, Avatar has taken in a whopping $73 million in it’s opening weekend! While this is at the low end of studio expectations, that figure still firmly places it as the second highest opening December weekend behind I Am Legend, and the biggest 3-D opening ever!

The other thing to take into account is that much of the east coast of the U.S was buried in record breaking snowfalls! So really the numbers are quite impressive.

Overall, despite the blizzard, box office was up a whopping 58 percent from last year, when the Jim Carrey comedy Yes Man was tops.

Twentieth Century Fox’s “Avatar” grossed $3.5 million in midnight runs from approximately 2,000 locations in a strong start for James Cameron’s sweeping 3D sci-fi fantasy.

Friday matinees are also selling out.

Many of the midnight runs were in 3D locations.

“Avatar” has a strong shot at securing the best December bow of all time. Current record holder is Will Smith starrer “I Am Legend,” which posted an opening weekend gross of $77.2 million. That film grossed roughly $30.6 million on its first Friday, including $1.7 million in midnight grosses from roughly 1,100 theaters.

Last night, James Cameron premiered his new film Avatar in London and the good news is apparently we are all in for a treat!

The crowd was cheering and clapping when the film ended (in the good way!), and apparently the most used word was the film left me “breathless”! Though Avatar doesn’t premiere until next week, early reviews have been leaking out, and some indicate that the word “breathless” might not be so overblown after all!

Variety’s  Todd McCarthy writes that it’s “…a film of universal appeal that just about everyone who ever goes to the movies will need to see.”

The Hollywood Reporter writes, “…movie magic is back!”

Empire magazine calls it “…a hugely rewarding experience: rich, soulful and exciting in the way that only comes from seeing a master artist at work.”

The Times UK calls it “…an overwhelming, immersive spectacle.”

And Screen International writes “It’s an unprecedented marriage of technology and storytelling which is on the whole remarkably successful.”

On the negative side though, the Guardian calls the movie “…baggy, longwinded and, for all the light-speed imagery, just not quick on its feet.”

If you’re like me, you’re still coming to terms with all this “James Cameron’s” this and that. Yes it his, but come on now. You also made Titanic and we still have to have words over that one buddy.

In a smart move on his part however, it seems he realized the importance of the video game spin off and wanted one that in his words “didn’t suck”, so while development of the film was taking place, the game itself was being worked on by video game developing Ubisoft out of their Montreal office.

Head on over to the official launch site for the game here, to see if you’d like to pre-order this baby. It is set to come out just before the movie release, so this will allow a good look at what we’re about to see on the big screen in regards to visuals. Word is however that this is not a retelling of the story, but that it is an offshoot of the film’s storyline.

The game will be on all major platforms – bonus with having it built concurrent with the film itself, plenty of time for mass market saturation. Turns out this James Cameron is on to something and putting his name all over this one might not be a bad idea.
