Sony Corp has reached a deal with Michael Jackson’s estate that could be worth as much as $250 million, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the situation.

The report said the deal, coming months after Jackson’s death, is the most lucrative recording contract ever signed. It guarantees the estate at least $200 million, according to the newspaper’s web site, and involves 10 albums over seven years.

The deal will combine a mix of previously unreleased songs and new packages of familiar ones, according to the report.

Sony has sold about 31 million of Jackson’s albums worldwide since his death on June 25, the report said. It added that the advances Sony will pay are to be offset by sales of albums as well as revenue generated by licensing Jackson’s music.

Sony’s deal with the estate retroactively covers the soundtrack album to This Is It. It also covers a number of other releases, some of which have been planned and others that still must be determined, according to the Wall Street Journal.

One album of previously unreleased songs is likely to hit stores before the end of this year, and another collection is due out later, it said.

I REPEAT…………………..

Ok………..So I was going to avoid getting dragged into a debate about Lady Gaga’s (lack of) talent but simply cannot fight the inevitability of this discussion……..

Am I a fan of Lady Gaga?….Not particularly…….Do i think she is a great artist?……not particularly……Do I think she is the one and only legitimate heir to Madonna’s throne?……Absolutely!

Lady Gaga is a perfect example that style will always outsell substance and talent every day. What I personally don’t get is how someone with an obvious talent for songwriting insists on going the lowest common denominator route?!

She is a marketing dream and has unapologetically been so…….as well as being a GENUINE ally to the gays (props for that!)………..but anyone who can write what is intrinsically a touching love song and then incorporate “Ra ra-a-a-a, Ro-ma-Ro-ma-ma, Gaga-ooh-la-la” in order to shift units is definitely compromising somewhere………you decide!

So…….let’s get this s*it storm started!

PS: I also refer you to my post about Telephone………………In case you were looking for my two cents worth, the song is B-Grade pop crap, the video is totally derivative and I am SO tired of her using other peoples ideas and getting called an original, musical uber-genius.

So……in case you’ve been living under a rock you would know that yesterday Lady Gaga’s self described “EVENT” occurred in the pop music world, with the unveiling of the full length movie-spoof style video to her duet with Beyonce entitled Telephone.

In case you were looking for my two cents worth, the song is B-Grade pop crap, the video is totally derivative and I am SO tired of her using other peoples ideas and getting called an original, musical uber-genius.

I know all my fellow gays are going to have me executed for saying so……….but at least OUR Divas actually WERE ground breaking, and original!…….Oh…….did I just have my very first “When i was a young girl” moment?

If you weren’t looking for my two cents worth, you can blow it out ya’ sparry-bags, sweetheart!

George Michael – True Diva!

First Britney disappointed, then Whitney did.

But George Michael broke the run of bad “comeback tours”, winning over more than 40,000 fans at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday night. When Michael sings “I won’t let you down” at the start of his hit Freedom, he delivers on his promise.

Taking to the stage 40 minutes late thanks to extreme traffic congestion around the inner-city venue, Michael was given a hero’s welcome.

Dressed head to toe in black, the former Wham! singer opened with Fast Love.

“Good evening Sydney, are you ready for a good night?” he said.

“It’s been 22 years.”

He then launched into crowd favourite I’m Your Man and Father Figure.

While divas like Britney Spears and Whitney Houston left some fans wanting their money back during their recent performances, Michael sang live, hit all his notes and whipped up a party for faithful followers, in his first Australian tour since his Faith tour in 1988.

He opened his 2010 tour in Perth last weekend and will play in Melbourne on March 3.

“You still look so f***ing good, I don’t get it – plenty of sunshine and sex I reckon,” he told the crowd!

Goes to show you just how much we gays rock! Stay tuned for our EXCLUSIVE report on George’s tour Down Under from our Australian correspondent soon!

On a side not can you believe that I was so stupid as to mess up my travel dates so I was not still in Oz to see him?……..Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

……or is she truly as savvy a businesswoman as she has always been?

Whether you love or hate the Material Girl, you must respect the fact that when it comes to business she has a keen eye and a cutthroat attitude!

So if the rumours about her signing over the rights to some of her songs, in order to secure her boy toy, Jesus Luz, a two single recording deal with her now ex-label Warners, then it has certainly raised some eyebrows as well as red flags!

In particular, Like A Prayer and Vogue have both been given the go ahead to be used in advertising campaigns in the U.S!

Let’s just hope he can sing…….although to be honest, if I was dating him then yeah…….it’s his singing I’d be interested in!

Jesus’ first single, We Came From The Light, will be released in May.

Whitney Continues To Falter!

Sad for the once shining Diva!

Whitney Houston’s S ydney concert got off to a good start after a debacle at her opening show in Brisbane that saw some fans demanding a refund.

But the show soon descended into a downhill slide in which a stream of fans walked out, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Music reviewers agreed Houston had the crowd on her side and early numbers promised a satisfactory performance. The Sydney Morning Herald writes: ‘Despite the terrible reviews following Houston’s Brisbane show – we saw the clips and there was no pretending they weren’t anything but excruciating – there may have been more goodwill in the room than even she imagined. Most people here were supporters hoping to see (at least) glimpses of their diva in full flight, rather than voyeurs itching to watch the indignity of her crumbling before their eyes.’

But the Telegraph reports that after a short, 13-minute costume-change break, Houston, 46, returned to repeat the coughing and voice strain that soured her Brisbane gig.

The paper reports: ‘By the time she got to the gospel section of the show a steady stream of disappointed, saddened and angry fans started streaming out the doors.’ Concert-goer Shane Norquay said: Some of it’s been beautiful and some it is just horrible.’

Another fan, Bernadette Latta, who received a $200 ticket to the show from her son, said: ‘It’s terrible. I have never walked out before a concert finished but that was just terrible. I’ll be suggesting my son tries to get a refund.’

Things are not looking good for Miss Houston’s much touted worldwide come back!

Disney On Top Again (For The Mo)!!

In a saga being watched by exhibitors and distributors around the world, U.K. exhibitor Vue has joined Cineworld in saying it will book Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” – despite its shortened DVD window.

The exhibitors felt that by Disney shortening the window of when the film is released at cinemas then onto dvd, it would lower their profit margin.

There also were indications Tuesday that U.K. circuit Odeon may back off from its threats to boycott “Alice.” Odeon, Cineworld and Vue are the largest circuits in the U.K., respectively, controlling 75% of the market.Vue’s announcement is a sizable victory for Disney, which intends to release “Alice” on DVD three months after its March 5 global bow compared to the standard four months. Vue said it supports not only Disney’s plans for “Alice” but a shortened window on as many as one or two Mouse House titles a year.

The battle over “Alice” signals a significant change in the current thinking on theatrical-to-DVD windows.

With an important territory like the U.K. dropping its opposition and no U.S. circuit publicly fighting Disney — so far, at least — other Hollywood studios are likely to shorten the window on some titles each year, as Disney is proposing.

Very soon they’ll just release the film on screens and dvd simultaneously!

More J.Lo Madness!

Why don’t people ever listen to me when I try to tell them their new album sux?

Bad news has arrived just one day after my prediction that all her new material that is questionably B-Grade, would come back to bite her in her famous butt!

A source announced this afternoon that J.Lo and Sony Music Epic Records were parting ways, yet there is some contradiction to the reasons why. Some say the split was amicable, stating Jennifer had finished her contract and was now ready to move elsewhere. Some are suggesting that Sony dropped her after disagreements over her 7th studio album, Love?, which has now been cancelled and will not be released.

Houston Has Major Problems!

Things may not be as alright in Whitneyland as we thought!

Pop diva Whitney Houston has struggled through the opening night of her first Australian tour since 1988, raising questions about the remainder of the concert series.

The 46-year-old actress and singer got through two songs at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Monday night before appearing breathless and exhausted, taking a break and then carrying a towel with her for the next few songs.

After half a dozen songs, during some of which she coughed, she left the stage to take a break, bringing on her brother, Gary Houston, to sing. The band and backing singers then performed an energetic version of Queen of the Night, from The Bodyguard soundtrack.

When she returned to the stage in a white pants suit, she settled down into a chair for a gravelly voiced acoustic version of some of her hits from the 1980s and 90s., but the multi-award winning singer appeared disoriented and failed to properly name some of her backing band as she introduced them to the audience.

She paid tribute to a couple in the front of the audience who told her they had been married 39 years, and went to the side of the stage, where she serenaded her teenage daughter Bobbi.

Houston had the audience on its feet with an impromptu gospel-infused tribute to the late Michael Jackson, two of whose cancelled This is It tour dancers are in her entourage, singing The Way You Make Me Feel and Wanna Be Starting Something.

But the final act, a string of groove-laden dance numbers and ballads, faltered at the finale when she croaked her way through I Will Always Love You, pausing to get a drink and towel off just as she was about to hit the song’s epic high note, which she turned into a soft coo.

So the story from the recent Brit Awards seems to be Liam. After accepting the award given to Oasis for Best Album of the last 30 years in which he thanks all but his brother, gets muted for swearing, then tosses the microphone and the award into the audience – which leads to host Peter Kay calling him out (you can follow that aftermath on the internet too fun stuff):

He then reportedly went backstage where he tackled a young woman who was dressed as a statue, and then went on live TV where he was interviewed by his wife Nicole Appleton and rambled about it and swore and talked about taking some “class A drugs” WARNING F BOMBS INSIDE:

Entertaining as always. Also some other stuff happened.

Spoon – Transference Review

While I may not have taken advantage – having the iTunes store offering   for this album was tempting. The thing with online music buying however is one doesn’t need to reserve their copy. The album was released on January 19 on iTunes, and marks the 7th major release in the band’s 15 year career.

Essentially this album is what I consider to be a slow burner. The tracks really do not deviate into any brave new territory comparable to the last outing – 2007s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. The vein feels the same and the building blocks for the tracks are based on a familiar foundation.

This said however, the release of the first single Got Nuffin ahead of the album release resulted in some major anticipatory action from the fan base – myself included. Why? Because these bastards can write an effing hook. Currently as I write this sentence Got Nuffin is playing and it’s hooked right into my cerebral cortex or wherever good songs go to stay embedded forever (or conversely where terrible songs go to drive you slowly over the edge as you find yourself whistling it randomly – see 1980s)

Starting up the album, introductory track  Before Destruction gives an impression of the band taking a musical step beyond – unfortunately it’s really the only such example, as the following track Is Love Forever? demonstrates – Spoon is doing here what it does best, but new ground is not being broken here, more like an addition onto an existing structure.

Now despite my previous words (less I am contradictory to the bitter end) there are some deviations from the standard Spoon-esque song building mechanism. Well, I say deviation, but in reality Spoon has always had the occasional track that will explore a different sound to a certain degree, they will experiment. Which is why I feel my previous statement still stands – this is not brave new territory.

(i will admit to be enjoying this contradictory nature)

Who Makes Your Money is a prime example of this – small touches of something different, or a different effect. This is why we can have a band like Spoon who has a sound that is very much their own, buy who can have release after release in this very sound and yet there is no repeating, nothing gets tired. I know about this effect very much, I’m a former pop-punk fan who after the Nth band that sounded like Screeching Weasel hit the scene, called it a day – and I know that was a real thing because I played in such a band.

This really is an album written with two demographics in mind – those who will hear the singles as first time listeners and get hooked – something I have always felt Spoon does with ridiculously fantastic ability, and those fans likes myself who want to hear the album unfold on multiple listens. The slow burn.

Also incidentally if someone told me this whole album was written with a particular person in mind, with the tracks spelling out the story of two people’s story of their time together, I would agree 100%. In fact consider this me telling you I feel this is the case. Stylistically this album feels as if it is grappling with the stages of acceptance of a relationship falling apart. Got Nuffin sounds entirely different when viewed in this  this context, it’s no longer just the hook, but now the stage where one feels that they need to do whatever they can to keep the other person – one last Hail Mary . This is the stage right before the full on grief hits, or right before one would feel as if Nobody Gets Me But You. This was written after the fact, which Written in Reverse admits – the love song to commemorate the relationship that just happened to come too late:

“…And I hear that famous song / When I hear it I can’t be wrong / I know nothing was planned, and you just can’t help yourself / Some people are so easily shuffled and dealt…”

52nd Grammy Awards

Remember back when I said using the fact that Steve Martin had the best selling bluegrass album in 2009 would get you some trivia points around the dinner table at Christmas? Well for the next get-together let them know that Steve Martin also won a Grammy award for Best Bluegrass album. True story.

Really though the story for the Grammys was Beyoncé and Taylor Swift – they cleaned up and will need a good sized book case to hold their collective awards. Beyoncé also set a new record for awards won (six) and Swift set a record for youngest Album of the Year winner (twenty).

Glad to see Phoenix won Best Alternative – although if it had gone to Yeah Yeah Yeahs for It’s Blitz that would have been OK because I am really digging that album right now again on vacation – it’s spun a few times now.

Head over to Grammy.com for a full list of categories, nominees, and winners – plus some highlights of the show. I’ve included a run down of the major categories for you though:

Record of the Year

* “Use Somebody” – Kings of Leon

Album of the Year

* Fearless – Taylor Swift

Song of the Year

* “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” – Beyoncé

Best New Artist

* Zac Brown Band

Best Rock Album

* 21st Century Breakdown – Green Day

Best Alternative Music Album

* Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix – Phoenix

Best Electronic/Dance Album

* The Fame – Lady Gaga

Best Dance Recording

* “Poker Face” – Lady Gaga

Best Rap Album

* Relapse – Eminem

Best Country Album

* Fearless – Taylor Swift

You checked out the full post? Thank you. I reward you with some Lady Gaga craziness. Elton John stops by as well.

Tomorrow, In A Year

Looking to get your opera on and don’t know where to begin? Happen to be a fan of The Knife? Well if you’re both, or maybe just one and still intrigued then head on over to theknife.net to get a track from their newest project with Mt. Simms and Planningtorock – an opera based upon none other than one Mr. Charles Darwin. It’s called Tomorrow, In A Year, and they’re giving away a track for free if you join the mailing list.

From The Knife’s website:

“Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book ‘On the Origin of the Species’, The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme. They extensively researched Darwin related literature and articles, with Olof attending a field recording workshop in the Amazon to find inspiration and to record sounds.”

Now if you’re scared of that word “opera” don’t despair, so were the band until they jumped in with both feet.

“At first it was very difficult as we really didn’t know anything about opera.  We’d never been to one. I didn’t even know what the word libretto meant. But after some studying, and just getting used to opera’s essence of pretentious and dramatic gestures, I found that there is a lot to learn and play with. In fact, our ignorance gave us a positive respectless approach to making opera. It took me about a year to become emotionally moved by an opera singer and now I really do. I really like the basic theatrical values of opera and the easy way it brings forward a narrative. We’ve approached this before in The Knife but never in such a clear way.”
