Marvel Studios and director Joe Johnston want to be really sure they’ve found the right actor to star in The First Avenger: Captain America.

Marvel has slightly expanded its search — adding actors that include Chris Evans, who already logged Marvel Comics superhero time as Johnny Storm/Human Torch in two Fantastic Four films.

Of the original contenders, two are still in serious contention: Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy).

Hedlund was on Marvel’s original wish list but didn’t test at first. Scheduling was th reason, but I also heard his reps balked when Marvel informed them that the job would include options for 9 future films and a salary of only around $300,000. It’s not going to work out for the other actors who tested: Chace Crawford (CW’s Gossip Girl), John Krasinski (NBC’s The Office), Scott Porter (NBC’s Friday Night Lights), Michael Cassidy (CW’s Privileged) or Patrick Flueger (Brothers).

Paramount Pictures will release the film July 22, 2011.

In case you were not sure, the answer is a resounding YES…….Garrett Hedlund is my new boyfriend!……………LOL.

The Variants

Combine one comic store, one attractive sassy girl, one slob, one sarcastic bitch, one weirdo owner, and lastly a guy with some serious social anxiety and you’ll get The Variants. This web series has been running since 2009 and is at episode 7 now, but better late then never I can vouch for it’s entertainment value.

Clearly DIY web TV is now a force to be reckoned with – clearly visible with the success of The Guild and Doctor Horrible’s Sing Along Blog – and now I feel we can add The Variants in that class as well.

The Return of Aliens vs Predator! What?

Dark Horse is returning life to its ‘Aliens vs Predator’ franchise, one which two movie incarnations massacred! Sheesh, you’d almost swear Ryan Reynolds made special appearances! Actually, I think he was one of the back ground Predators; they tried to hide him in full Predator garb but it still didn’t help. Lesson learned I guess…

I digress! The point of this article is to assure people that no one does it like DH does it, so be ready for some good throw down between these two behemoths! AND the exciting news is DH founder and original writer on the original series, Randy Stradley, is returning to work on this project. Quality assured!

The Brightest Day Nursery

gl time

And of course if there is a Blackest Night then there must be a Brightest Day right? Seriously… even though Johns does come up with some great writing, he needs to work on his naming conventions! I can’t spit that out without feel like I’m reciting a nursery rhyme… nonetheless, I can’t wait to see how Mr. Johns revamps the DCU! Tomasi and Johns will be spear-heading the Brightest Day follow-up. Should be exciting!

The Buffy-verse Continues.

We all know how rabidly obsessive Joss Whedon is with the worlds he creates. For anyone familiar with this man’s seminal work, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, may be interested to know that a Willow one-shot comic had been released recently. And in case you’ve been completely under a rock, yes the show was continued, story-wise, in comic form.

The Willow ‘one-shot’ stands out as it is actually written by Joss. The last batch of comics have seen other writers, and to be honest have been a bit all over the place at times. However, Joss reunites with Fray artist Karl Moline (great artist indeed) and produces a decent comic. Refreshing actually. In case you are wondering on jumping aboard the Buffy Season 8 gravy train, I would buy the tpb instead of picking up the monthly book.

The Buffy comics are more solid than the Angel series (which I’ve dropped due to boredom… pity since I started liking the tv show more so than Buffy) but overall story would flow better as a longer read. Also, you may be able to appreciate the comic to a certain degree if you are up to date with the show; however, the Willow comic is a ‘one-shot’ that you should be somewhat up to date with the comic series to fully appreciate.

Night & Fog To Be Made Movie!

Producer Gil Adler (”Superman Returns”) and Shane McCarthy have optioned Studio 407’s sci-fi horror comic “Night and Fog” reports Variety.

Set during WWII, the story revolves around an infectious mist unleashed on a military base that transforms its victims into preternatural creatures of the night, but when the survivors try to kill them, they adapt and change into something even more horrific and unstoppable.

I figured I might at well post on this one since The Merc is on probation for badmouthing Ry-Ry!

Kick Ass Trailer… no really…

I knew Miller and Romita Jr’s hit comic book series ‘Kick Ass’ was being made into a movie… I had no idea it was this quick. Coming soon… apparently. Usually I get all proto-nerd when these movies get made and yell at people to appreciate the medium of comic books over the dreaded Hollywood monster. But it was apparent from the get go that Miller and RJ wanted this from the start. The comic reads like a storyboard for a movie.

So this is extremely exciting news. I do enjoy this series whenever it arrives irregularly into my file. It’s about a kid who fantasizes about becoming a superhero so much that he decides to don a costume and fight for justice as a masked crusader… though it ends up pretty gritty and dark. Watch the trailer it kicks ass! Sorry… had to…

A Monster Manga turned Anime!

I just found out the other day that one of the best manga’s I’ve read in a while was made into anime. The box set of the original release came out this month. Though I read a fair bit of manga, I’m not really an anime nut, but for those who are you should definitely check out “Monster”.

Last year was all about Deathnote for me, until I finished the series after its 12 book run. I was at a loss, until I was tipped off to this awesome manga. Monster is a story about a doctor, Tenma, whose choice to save a child, instead of adult, ends up being one that haunts him. The child grows up to become a sociopathic murderer which causes Tenma grief and sets him on a path to seek redemption. It’s a different type of story I’m used to reading in manga form, which usually are the ones to attract me.

It’s good!

I hate it when people cling to a belief that superhero comics must be static ie: Bruce Wayne must be Batman, Superman must fight Lex Luther forever, they must live until infinity etc. There’s alot of this type of discussion surrounding Bruce Wayne’s return as Batman — it has stirred up quite a rouse.

In my eyes the debate is caught on a hook though. The culprits are those who believe superheroes need to return to their natural state and that there is an unsaid equillibrium causing their stories to ‘naturally’ gravitate back. Let me go on record stating that the best comic related stories of the last ten years have all departed from that philosophy. All good things must change and change isn’t necessarily bad.

I get the intrinsic value behind traditional themes in a story, but lets not blind ourselves to the obvious capitalist agenda driving this industry. The North American comic book industry does not see the support that our Asian friends give their comic book community, thus I can see some desperation and clinging to certain ideals. However, some of the problems plaguing the stories we see month over month is that there is no real evolution. I understand that Batman cannot become a Care Bear but clearly its readership doesn’t ask for that.

All I know is that it should be painfully obvious that people want what they are seeing. Sales are up on titles that don’t cling to archaeic story devices. The good writers are the rebels and the rebels put new thoughts in your head allow you to evolve as a person, not stay stagnant and bored. So why go back? Back better be good or you fail!

Here’s a triple shot

Series: DC Comics – Green Lantern

I’m not going to dive too deeply into this as I’ve already explained the greatness of Geoff Johns previous; however, this is his seminal work in the comic industry. I’m sure he’ll have other great projects but GL will always be the one that people refer back to when they wish to recall his name in conversation.

Johns is a revisionist, so for those die-hards out there, you better be willing to accept change. Fortunately for everyone it is good change. There were obvious weak, or under explored, points in the Green Lantern mythos that Johns so brilliantly fills the gap on. This title isn’t only worth picking up on a monthly basis, it’s worth building a time machine to go back and start collecting from the first – or you could also buy the TPB’s…

Series: DC Comics – Green Lantern Corps

If you haven’t figured it out yet I am a GL follower and I take my GL mythos seriously. I was kind’ve scared when they announced this title a couple years ago, only because there are 1092831902831 ways to mess it up and 1 way to get it right. Fortunately, writer Tomasi understood that what GL needed was the perfect balance of military sci-fi drama.

Though it would seem, as of late, Tomasi’s job is being done for him with the all encompassing Blackest Night story thread invading the DCU at the moment, I feel the opposite is true. Because of Tomasi’s incredible storytelling the Blackest Night is getting a healthy dose of the awesome from him.  Not the other way around. He’s taken a clever GL ensemble from the varied DCU and stuck them together perfectly; his stories are cleverly interwoven and show great character interaction set in a fantastically under-explored universe. I couldn’t think of a better team than Johns and Tomasi leading the charge on the Green Lantern front.

Series: Marvel Comics – Thor

If you asked me last year if I’d ever like a Thor run I would have laughed openly into your face and there would have been spittle involved. Disgusting I know. However, I’ve been proven wrong simply because Marvel finally decided to put a good writer on board with Thor for once, J. Michael Straczynski.

For some of you that name already rings a bell, so hopefully those of you among the sci-fi community won’t shoot me because I didn’t know this name prior to reading his works on Thor… but apparently he was the think-tank behind Babylon 5, which according to some was the awesome. I cannot quantify that statement; however, I’m more inclined to believe that now that I’ve finished his complete run on Thor. This was a fantastic read from start to finish and should not be overlooked. Unfortunately, for you dear reader his run on Thor is over so I would just keep your eyes peeled for the trade paper backs. I myself am weary of following this book further without the JMS stamp.

DC and the Holiday Spirits?

DC had some interesting tidbits leak recently (drunken staff party around a pc). One of the most curious being the return of Bruce Wayne. As you may have already known, Bruce Wayne (spoiler), the first and true Batman, was killed recently in Final Crisis. Dick Grayson, of former Robin, then Nightwing fame, took his place as the Batman, which created an arch of the story that I actually enjoyed. I’m not sure I care for this idea of bringing Bruce Wayne back… at least so close to his death. But bringing heroes back isn’t exactly above DC or Marvel, they are as see through as a _______ dollar _______ ; however, I personally would’ve enjoyed the experience if they lingered on this idea/story arch longer.

Verdict: They had better find an interesting way of bringing Wayne back or I jump ship on this title.

Good news - Geoff Johns will be returning to the Flash title to hopefully resurrect it. My two favorite characters in the DC universe are the Green Lantern and Flash. If he can do as wonderful of a job on Flash as he has on GL/Booster Gold, I’ll be happy. So far Flash rebirth has had some interesting up’s and down’s. Johns has been reported as saying the new series will be like “superhero CSI”.

Verdict: Definitely worth a check. How much longer until Johns rules the world of DC?

I don’t follow Superman a whole lot, but if you are a fan DC is going to be launching an idea called the ‘War of the Supermen’.

Verdict: I’d be watchful and just make sure there’s some caliber of writing going on. I find Superman is a tough character for people to write in an interesting way — stories are often hit or miss. It’s best just to be careful.

Good-bye Norman

dark avengers

My pet peeve right now, this instant, is that comic publishers have a tendency to move their writers/storylines along too fast. I was a huge fan of the Norman Osbourne Thunderbolts, collected every last comic in the series. Warren Ellis did an awesome job spinning a believable reality for criminals trying to be heroes. Would’ve preferred had that lingered a little longer.

However, Norman Osbourne’s Avengers (The Dark Avengers) came about during the Skrull Invasion and wasn’t a terrible idea, but I can see where it is starting to meander now and come across as forced. I think they raced to where we are at a little too fast in my opinion so I’m going to end my affair with this title for a bit until it picks up steam again. I know it will… just saying…

Geoff Johns wins the best comic book writer at the 2009 Scream Awards! I have to admit I was pretty impressed that they opened up this category and acknowledged the comic arts in such a prestigious way. You can tell these guys don’t get a lot of press time like their Hollywood cousins, so it was nice to see a guy, who ninety percent of the audience didn’t know from a hole in the ground, get the blind recognition he deserved!

Good job Johnsy ol’ boy. Keep up the good work!

And if you couldn’t stand it any longer… here’s some more!

Series: Image – The Walking Dead

If for some reason I had to choose one comic to keep getting on a monthly basis it would be Walking Dead. Not only because I am a zombiphile but because the series is truly one of the best out there in terms of art and story content. Both are dark, gritty and lived in; the way all zombie stories should be.  And in terms of scale and scope of the project, Walking Dead is unmatched. Heck, it is the zombie story that will never end (Death to Lamb-chop)! It is safe to say no zombie comic (nor fiction) has ever come close to that. It’s the perfect blend of drama and horror and a delight to read each month.  Period. Does more really need to be said? Fine…

As I’m writing this, the series is 67 comics deep (spanning one year in story). To say there have been some interesting twists and turns would be an understatement. If you didn’t know better, you would begin to think Kirkman was trying to shock the pants off you (and maybe he is to a degree). Where he really delivers this year is in the plot twists, they have been awesome (the hunter story line for example). However, I did pick up weaker elements in his character stories. I found the writing to be a bit surreal particularly with his work on Rick’s son Carl. His attempt to breach the broken innocence theme comes across a bit premature and forced at times.  Too much story is invested into Carl, a character who six months ago was just an average toddler caught in a zombie apocalypse. Now we are expected to believe he’s transformed from the true toddler to a maturing cowboy capable of having heart to heart conversations with dear ol’ Dad about being a hero? The believability factor waded a bit for me there. Luckily, there has been so much awesomeness, it made forgiveness easy.

Oh Ryan Reynolds how you’ve so quickly become my arch-nemesis. So far you’ve ruined one of my favorite all time comic characters, and yes I know you didn’t technically write the story that massacred everything Deadpool could have been onscreen, but you still allowed the name Wade Wilson to be defecated upon on your watch… that cannot be forgiven. On top of that, I hear he’s been confirmed to play the Green Lantern – Hal Jordan, my all-time, childhood, favorite DC superhero. Let’s just say I’m in my own personal hell right now and the only thing to break me out of it temporarily is this youtube “Hi, I’m a Marvel… and I’m a DC” video posted below…

This live puppet representation of Deadpool does a better job capturing his personality than the Wolverine movie. Think about that!

As promised… or forewarned?

Series: DC COMICS – Booster Gold, the greatest hero the world has never known!

Booster Gold is the hidden gem of all superhero comics – plain and simple. This one is probably one of the most daring projects I’ve read in awhile, and serves as a shining example of how a writer can take a stunningly boring character story, turn it upside down until it’s so epic you can no longer control your bladder – on top of that it was such a great read you weren’t even embarrassed!

This series came out of nowhere last year (also spun from the mind of Geoff Johns) and bathed in the ashes of everyone’s scattered preconceived notions of a character long since banished to the DCU hall of shame: Booster Gold. Thanks to Johns efforts an obscure nobody got a complete make-over and still looked good afterward, and by good I mean unbelievably pivotal to a universe housing such classics as Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Batman to name a few.

Though the series changed staff this year, the caliber of writing and themes did not suffer, despite expressed worries throughout the boards. Instead, Jurgens was able to pick up where Johns left off and add to it nicely, albeit on a much less epic scale. Jurgens still manages to find interesting niches within the world Johns created (seems to be Jurgens’ style). Either way the story remains intact, as well does the character; each comic is a solid installment worth buying.

The Christmas Comic Experience

Memories. The snow sitting in my driveway forced me to recall the best of Sunday morning comic strips: Calvin and Hobbes. When I was a youth, near every x-mas I’d pick a day and mow through every Christmas Calvin and Hobbes comic strip I could find in my collection. Was one of the earliest collections that defined my love of the comic arts. Oh, silly Bill Watterson how I miss your witty ways. I half wanted to build an army of snow-zombies resurrecting from their snow graves in spirit of the memory — quickly realized shoveling was enough.

For this article I’ve deeming myself the master of the universe (no sword or power cat required) in the realm of comics so that I can advise you, my misdirected reader, to the best of the best this past year had to offer in the way of serial comic fiction. You may be asking yourself “Serial comic fiction? Who the hell says that and what’s its meaning?” I say who better to answer than the Merc? And since you know neither my credentials, nor my IQ, or any of my secret agendas, all you can do is shake your head in agreement…

Serial comic fiction refers to comic books published ongoing in a weekly and/or monthly fashion.  I don’t care who you are, everyone must own up to having seen classic examples such as ‘The Amazing Spiderman: Issue (an uncountable number)’ on store stands before. With prices as high as they’ve become on comics, sadly it’s not as easy, or as fun, as it once was to go to the comic store. You have to be all serious and money crunching. Thus, it is my solemn duty to highlight what’s worth forking over your hard earned money for.

The Biggest of Big Events: DC COMICS -The Blackest Night

Let me start off by saying normally I hate these big universal events for the simple reason they drag on forever.  You see something that starts out as a good germ of an idea morphs/devolves painfully into a shallow image of its former glorified state, which you’re not likely to remember by the end of it.

Thankfully, and I can’t speak for all the tie-ins as I refuse to buy into the entire marketing campaign, I am pleased to announce the core story, “Blackest Night”, as well as select tie-in story lines (Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, Booster Gold, Batman, Teen Titans)  are fantastic reads. Though every ‘big event’ is touted to be the second coming of Christ, we finally have an event that lives up to the hype surrounding it (still an active series).

No matter which side of the fence you are on in terms of the superhero genre, the story has something for superhero genre fans and deconstructionists alike (Watchmen, The Boys, Kick Ass fans I know you’re out there).  The art is fantastic; however,  the calibre/bar has been raised by the writer, Geoff Johns, whose wonderful writing not only proves, time and time again, that he knows his comic stuff, but also proves he’s just a good ol’ fashion storyteller – a rare commodity these days. I would break knee’s to ensure Johns’ good name never gets sullied… at least until he screws up and writes something horrible. Good Lord who art anywhere, please do not let that day come!

to be continued…

Okay. The title does say alot but it’s not entirely indicative of my stance on what will happen now that Disney has bought out Marvel. It just has a nice ring – that and Donald’s spin punches were hilarious!

Having been announced a few months back in August, in reality this topic has already come and gone.   However, it still feels as fresh as the day it was announced, at least everywhere I go (yeah, yeah). The question of ‘What will become of Marvel?’ seems to have replaced ‘You see last week’s re-run episode of Battlestar Galactica?’ in the land of the Geeks, which tells me the nerd community stirs. The constant bickering between Marvel purists who believe Disney will leave their taint over Marvel’s prestigious fictional lineage versus those who believe Disney’s large purse will unleash the true potential of Marvel’s starving artists has left a community in disarray. It is now time to find that sweet equilibrium and shove it down people’s throats!

First question, doesn’t anyone else find it odd and hypocritical that a community that already witnessed a merger between DC Comics and Warner Brothers cannot foresee a future for Marvel Comics? Granted, the WB is not the same type of company as Disney (criticized for their use of sweatshops and child labor); however, they have set an example by staying out of the business of DC comics, other than to distribute and make the odd cartoon, television show, theme park ride, or movie.  The idea of funneling creativity through comics and into other mediums is insanely popular at the moment, so why would we believe the even more business savvy Disney would not make similar choices?

In terms of creative control, this merger means nothing. I think it’s quite clear that Disney’s arms are tied in good business practice. Number one: Marvel’s biggest blockbusters are signed deals with other companies. Number two: Marvel’s comic library is too established / revered to be manipulated without becoming a catastrophic failure. Neither point seems to have deterred Disney from going forward on the deal. As such, I would expect them to look for new opportunities in the future, be it through new toys, kid’s cartoons and the like, but don’t expect any company as driven to make the almighty buck as Disney to be stupid enough to anger Marvel’s core fans.  At Least until the demographic of those core fans shift… but until then the only question you should be asking yourself is ‘Are those Hulk pajamas made in North America?’

Prediction: Marvel Comics will go largely untouched by Disney for a long time, aside from the occasional subtle references found hidden like secret treasures throughout various Deadpool comics – nothing escapes Deadpool’s fourth dimensional awareness. Remember that when all hope is lost.

Sincerely,

The Merc

PS: Big thanks to the Mo and the Ro for being hip to the comic scene and giving me the chance to strut my stuff all over these inter-webs in style.
